Sperm. Forgive the simplistic explanation, but this is what I recall from science class. Human chromosomes are paired; women have XX and men have XY (for gender). The egg contributes one genger chromosome and the sperm contributes one. The woman only has Xs to give, so the actual determination of the baby's gender depends on whether the sperm that reaches the egg is carrying an X or a Y.

Sex is determined by the man's sperm. (Women have two x chromosomes, so ALL eggs are 'x') Men are xy, so half the sperm will be x, and half will be y. There is some evidence that y sperm swim faster (they are lighter, because the y chromosome is smaller), so timing your attempts MAY slightly influence the sex of the baby. But it's mostly luck. Whichever sperm gets to the egg first is the winner. (And speed isn't the only factor.)

What sex a baby will be is decided when the egg and sperm unite.
Each egg and each sperm have one sex chromosome.
There are two kinds of sex chromosomes X and Y. Can you see why they are called x and y chromosomes?
Eggs carry an X and sperm carry either an X or a Y
X+X means the cell will develop into a baby girl.
X+Y means that it will develop into a boy.

A sperm carries either an X or Y chromosome, while an egg only carries an X chromosome. When the two pair, the chromosome carried by the SPERM determines whether it is a boy or a girl.
XX - Girl
XY - Boy
