I'm going to a fertility doctor on Friday! I have been trying for almost 2 years.....?

On the first appointment, she will probably ask questions and stuff, does anyone know if they do an exam or anything? Also what are some good fertility methods that work so I can ask her about them! I already know about Clomid! Thanks!

I am 19 weeks pregnant and it took me 3 years to fall pregnant. I am 31. At my first apt with the fertility specialist he checked that i had had a pap smear and asked a lot of lifestyle and health questions. They get you to have a blood test to rule out thyroid probs and early menopause.



I tried clomid and really wouldnt recommend it to anyone. It didnt work and the side effects were horrible. I then did ovulation induction where you inject hormones into the skin daily and at the same time your blood is assessed. The aim is to try and produce one or maybe 2 eggs. Then via an internal ultarsound they will check how many egg producing follicles the drugs have stimulated you to produce and then you inject a drug which makes you ovualte. You can then time intercourse with ovulation or they can inject the sperm into you (this is known as IUI - intrauterine insemination).



Anyway unfortunately this failed for me after several attempts also and my next option was ivf (they us the same drugs during ivf).



I decided to put the whole thing off and then fell pregnant with no assistance whatsoever and i am now 19 weeks.



I would do you reseach on clomid as my obstetrician is also a fert specialist and he said that he was thinking about not prescribing it anymore for much the same reasons as i didnt like it - it didnt work and the side effects were horrible.



Anyway - good luck it is frustrating to have to go through all that but worth it - when i see the baby kicking during ultrasounds you cant wipe the smile off my face. I found out last week it is a boy .........very happy

I have worked in a fertility clinic for the past three years so I am aware of all the protocols and drugs that are available to you. If this is your first appt, most doctors will go over your medical history and medical records with you. It depends on the reason that you are not getting pregnant such as it may be a male factor with the sperm or you might have something going on with the tubes. Most doctors will do what they call a HSG, which is a outpatient procedure that is also called the dye test. The procedure looks at the condition with your tubes to see if they are any blockages or damage. Your husband or partner will need to have a sperm analysis done to look at the condition with his sperm and the count, motility (the way the sperm moves) and to check for antibodies. If it is a male factor, most of the time they will reccomend the ICSI procedure, that is when they inject the sperm into the egg, that way you will achieve fertilization. The only two procedures that are being offered are IUI (intrauterine insemination) you can do a protocol that involves the clomid with that or Bravelle or Repronex, Gonal-f and they will let you know how many times and what days to do the shots and when it is time for you to ovulate, you can either do intercourse at home or come back into the office for the doctor to insert the sperm in and the last procedure is IVF(in-vitro fertilization) this involves about 10 to 14 days of injections and having your eggs removed vaginally and having them implanted with your partners sperm 3 to 5 days later. Both of these procedures require injections and blood work and ultrasound monitoring to check your follicles and blood levels. These are some of the questions the physician might ask you at your initial consult visit.

Hi there, I am just going through the same thing...we have also been trying for 2 years. On the first appt, they ask tons of questions, do a pap test and send your hubby for a semen analysis. if that is all normal...they will send you for blood work then an hsg x-ray test to see if your tubes are blocked. What happens next depends on all the test results. I am starting clomid next cycle.

I just went last week and they will do a mini exam on you and some blood work (expect to be there 1-2 hrs) and then you will need to set up an appointment for sperm analysis for the man,she will also get you started on prenatel pill's if you aren't already taking them. You can mention an HSG (dye insertion into your fallopion tubes to see if they are blocked). Good luck!

Well my husband and I have been going to a specialist, and she ask us how long we had been trying, with our ages, and she done a vaginal ultrasound to check my ovaries and look around in there to see if there were anything different that she could see. Then my husband done a semen analysis. And she took blood from both of us. But now we are waiting for it to cool off because my husband works out in the heat, and heat can kill sperm. Then after it cools off, he goes for another analysis. Cause his count had been very low. And we are trying the small things to see if they help first, then well go further and more detailed.

I hope your appt goes well. I had an exam on my first appt and my husband was scheduled thereafter. I did have the dye exam and we got pregnant. Apparently my tubes were just blocked. We were not aware of our pregnancy until the day after my husband had surgery to increase his sperm count!!:)

PROBABLY DEPENDS ON THE DR. IF THEY DO AN EXAM OR NOT. I WOULD THINK THAT THEY WOULD. WISHING YOU THE BEST.
